“I got into trails purely by accident one day when the pavement just stopped and a trail around Wellington’s south Coast began. Instantly I was hooked. It was so much more serene than running next to cars, as I found myself scrambling over rocks and through the trails to keep moving forward on my planned run.
Shortly after this, my son was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. We were shipped initially to Christchurch for treatment. During this first few rounds of treatment, as a distraction from hospital life I signed up for the now Tarawera Ultramarathon 50km in the November, and the 100km in the February; eventually doing the 62km event. The escape, and external distraction helped and I was able to ‘find my tribe’ … which is the trail running community.”
