“I consider myself fortunate. I have always been active, had a competitive nature and a desire to win, either as an individual or part of a team.
Still playing football into my late 30s, I felt a new challenge was needed. Whilst walking the Tongariro Crossing one weekend, I was surprised by a group of runners racing the Tongariro Circuit. This appealed, so I decided to retire the boots and buy my first pair of trail shoes.
The last 10 years, trail running has been a big part of my life. At first it was all about the events, the times, training harder, running faster, but these days it’s more about being smarter and enjoying the social aspect from being around like minded people.
But what is trail running to me? I’m an individual, a creature of habit and running is what I enjoy. I feel in control, I love the solitude it brings and it’s a good way to de stress and clear the mind. I can still be competitive, push the boundaries of pain, find out how mentally strong I am all whilst discovering new and interesting places to run.
The feeling of euphoria and sense of achievement running brings makes be feel alive. It’s addictive, but in a good way, unless you try, you will never know.”
