After a few years of road running and a longer diversion into triathlon I finally stumbled into the world of trail running pretty much by accident. The seed of an idea to run the entire Welsh coastline somehow became a reality. With little thought to the terrain I would be running on, I started the path as a triathlete in road running shoes, and came out 33 days later in my first pair of trail shoes and a sense of finally finding my sport.
“Over the years running has flowed in and out of being just a small part of who I am, to almost defining me as a person. From early days of cross-country getting covered in mud, to my first attempts at road marathons, during which I told myself each time ‘never again’.
Now days I use running as a form of meditation, competition, exploration and so much more. I am recharged mentally and physically by escaping into nature and am continually in awe of where my body can take me. Finally the social aspect of trail running is perhaps the most important for me; particularly with biological family so far away, having running Whanau in New Zealand and a sense of belonging is huge.”
