“I took up running in my early 20’s when I got my first desk job. Prior to this I had always been quite active and worked outdoors, and I really missed that sitting in front of a computer. For me running was a way to get moving again and get that outdoor time I was craving.

With encouragement from a flatmate I signed up for my first half marathon and it all just kind of flowed on from there. And like anyone, I’ve had ups and downs with running, fun times with injuries and making time for training when life gets tough. Running is meant to be easy right?!

I was fortunate to meet a great coach a few years back who helped me improve my technique and mental game. I also took up hiking which has been a complete game-changer with my running. Trust me, walking big hills is the go!

Over the years I’ve entered lots of fun events and discovered I’m definitely more of a trail fan than a roadrunner. I did my first Marathon at Poronui last year and am aiming for the ultra distance this year.

The mental health aspect of running is huge for me; the sense of accomplishment, time to think, and fresh air is all so important. As are the amazing connections you make with fellow runners and adventurers. I’m so grateful for all the beautiful people I’ve met in this journey of life. I’ve had some low times in the past couple of years, and spending time with my running fam and adventure buddies was a crucial part of getting through the hard days.

In general, I live for adventure! You’ll rarely find me at home on weekends – combining running with hiking and exploring interesting places, often solo. I love the challenge and the connection with nature and the world around me.

Running. A piece of the puzzle in the big jigsaw of life.”
