“The why isn’t noteworthy for me, it’s more the ‘why haven’t you stopped?’
There’s no secret to it really, other than to keep showing up.
I know we’ve all had those thoughts when it comes to running: What if I’m too slow? What if I turn up to a group run and nobody talks to me? What if it hurts!? What if I fail? What if I drive there and my kid has a meltdown and I have to drive straight home again? But really, what’s the worst that can happen? You could be like me… you could sprain an ankle so badly it swells to a cricket ball, get a stress fracture in your pelvis, split your chin open, lose a toe nail, miss a job interview because of poor run route planning, spend months on crutches, spew in a bush, come last in a race, or when you do finally win a race, your shorts are on backwards! Is any of it so bad that it outweighs the enormous good?
What if before you showed up you thought – I might meet a lifelong friend today; I might inspire someone to run too; I could surprise myself and run my best time; There might be a box of free lemons at the top of the Bridle trail today; Or even limes! What if I have the time of my life today?
It’s that positive self talk that keeps me going. You’ve just got to look for the good and keep showing up for yourself.”
