“I grew up on a small island in the North of Scotland. I remember running with my brothers on the beach, seeing how  fast we could traverse the rocks. You needed fast footwork to do this! We spent our days out in all weathers: exploring  coastlines, hills and cliffs, coming home after 10 hours ready for dinner and the fireplace.

When I moved to New Zealand 4 years ago, I rekindled my childhood running joy. After walking some of the amazing  tracks and mountains, I began trail running. I loved the freedom and ability to experience an epic day-long walk within just a few hours. Trail running became my ‘me’ time. Days off would entail finding a new trail or mountain peak, encountering epic scenery and wildlife. It replenishes, inspires and makes me the best self I can be. Solutions appear  to problems, ideas and epiphanies present themselves and perspective is gained. The post run endorphins aren’t bad  either.

I’ve been trail running for 3 years, initially solo, but now in events. My childhood practice seems to have been worthwhile as I manage to do well in these. Generally selecting those events where I haven’t been or that offer a unique challenge, my partner and I will plan a trip around it, packing in things to do before or after. For some of the harder races I consider the quote: “Pain is temporary, memory is forever” as I’ve had awesome experiences due to these, as  well as finding what I’m capable of.

The running and events community never ceases to amaze me. You can’t find a more kind, dedicated, compassionate,  diverse, all-inclusive, friendly group. I feel lucky to have met and shared experiences with phenomenal people along the way. Running gives many different things to people, no matter their level. I run for joy, fitness, mental wellbeing, adventure, achievement, connection, and challenge. Different reasons on different days.

I’m always seeking new and different challenges. Last year I taught myself to swim and completed my first Ironman. New Zealand is full of world-class adventures and challenges. I endeavour to push myself and experience what life has  to offer. Running has been a big part of that and will continue to be.”
