“A few years back our family got a dog that required some exercise. Since I mostly work from home it became a thing to put on trail shoes first thing in the morning and walk the dog in the local hills. That seemed to create a bit of base fitness and when my wife started training for and completing ultra-marathons, I got inspired to speed things up.
I joined her for a few Xterra races and found I could make it to the end. My shonky knee held up fine and apart from every other part of me hurting all the time, I could do it! Running worked. That’s led to pacing my wife through a long ultra, then joining relay runs and eventually a few ultras myself.
Running or hiking has become part of the daily now. I love the simplicity and community of it. The sense of purpose and focus when you commit to a long race is very real and very rewarding.”
