“I’ve always been reasonably fit but didn’t consider myself a runner. I have always enjoyed getting up the mountain trails and timed myself – not only for the challenge but to safely plan how far I can go. There are some amazing beautiful trails around NZ which you need to spend a bit of effort to get to, and running allows me to experience that environment.
I didn’t realise how much running meant to me until I went through a tough time with a relationship separation, work redundancy and health issues. It all seemed to come at once and took me to some dark places. I found running was something I could control and it challenged me. I always felt better after finishing a good run. And when I don’t get out – my metal fitness suffers, so why stop.
This was when I became more serious about running and I started running with a great bunch of guys and gals at the Frontrunner New Plymouth run group. I didn’t usually run with others before and found the social aspect of running is compelling. Now I’ve met some fantastic people who supported and encouraged me, which is the biggest reason I get excited to get out and run. And there are running events coming up all the time which helps tick off the bucket-list items!”
